La'al Ratty Activities

The La’al Ratty is a miniature steam railway that runs year round from Eskdale to Ravenglass on the Cumbrian coast.
We have developed a range of journey based activities in conjunction with the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway.
The journeys all begin in Eskdale and end in Ravenglass, and the price includes a one way ticket back to Eskdale on the fantastic La’al Ratty.
Outside of the main holiday periods the Ratty runs on a reduced timetable – follow this link or call us for availability:

Picnics can be arranged by West lakes Adventure on request
Journey elements can still be completed if the train isn’t running but the return journey will be by minibus (diesel - not steam driven!)

Ramble & Ratty
A memorable journey on foot accompanied by one of our local guides. You have a choice of two routes both beginning in Eskdale Green. The low level route follows the picturesque Eskdale Bridleway for 8½ miles, whilst the high level route traverses Muncaster fell and provides stunning views of the Lake District fells and the Ravenglass Estuary, with the Solway Coast beyond. During the 3 – 4 hour walk your guide will provide in-depth knowledge and information about local history, the local environment and its wildlife. Both routes pass by through the grounds of Muncaster Castle and the well preserved ruins of a Roman Bath house before heading into Ravenglass for the 7 mile return journey to Eskdale on the La’al Ratty which takes 40 minutes.
Ride & Ratty
Accompanied by a qualified mountain bike guide your party will ride 8½ miles along the picturesque Eskdale Trail to Ravenglass. The ride follows an easy non-technical track and the route is similar to that taken by the low level route featured in the Ramble & Ratty section.
Mountain Bikes can be provided by West Lakes or feel free to use your own, providing they meet our minimum safety standards. The 7 mile return journey to Eskdale on the La’al Ratty takes 40 minutes.
River & Ratty
Under the guidance of a qualified British Canoe Union Coach, journey down the River Esk in 2 person open canoes whilst developing your canoeing skills. The river begins in a mountain environment and descends a number of small safe weirs that are easily navigable; it then evolves into a tidal river as it meanders towards the Ravenglass Estuary. We then use the outgoing tide to assist the journey for the last couple of miles into Ravenglass before returning on the La’al Ratty.

Note: due to the tidal nature of the River it isn’t always possible to complete this journey, however alternative flat water venues are available and the day can still end on La’al Ratty.
